Founded in the 1950s, the original structure housed assembly for Ford vehicles. Unfortunately, the plant closed down a few decades later due to increasing competition with Japanese auto manufacturers. It sat abandoned for some time until the early 1990s when developers re-sized the former plant and converted it into a mall. There is an oak tree with a plaque commemorating Great Mall’s history stands in the southwest
The Great Mall of the Bay Area, which opened on September 22, 1994, was developed as a joint venture between Ford Motor Land Development Corporation (Dearborn, MI) and Petrie Dierman Kughn (McLean, VA).

The mall houses several hundred stores and boasts a retail floor area of 1,357,000 square feet. Food, apparel, electronic goods, sporting goods, and entertainment – including a Dave & Busters, Mini Golf, and the Century 20 Great Mall theaters.
